Every year, for as long as I can remember, my mom makes homemade chex mix during Thanksgiving. It is something I look forward to every year and my favorite holiday tradition.
For some, Thanksgiving is a time for turkey, cranberry sauce or pumpkin pie. For my family, it’s a time for homemade chex mix and a new 1,000 piece puzzle. Don’t get me wrong, we definitely indulge in more turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pie than we should. But my favorite holiday tradition has always been the chex mix that my mom makes every year.
I don’t know what started the ‘chex mix for Thanksgiving’ tradition. There is definitely nothing “Thanksgiving-y” about chex mix…it can be eaten and enjoyed all year long. But for some reason, Thanksgiving week is chex mix week in my family’s household. It’s the main thing my sister and I look forward to every year.
It may be the (ridiculous) amount of butter, possibly the baked Worcestershire sauce, or maybe the fact that my mom’s annual chex mix is only enjoyed once a year..but it is the best I’ve ever had.
I always look forward to the annual tupperware container of chex mix and, in recent years, have joined in helping my mom make her batches. It is so simple to make, the best snack and is definitely a tradition that I will carry on with my family one day. Bonus: it makes so much, that you can share this holiday tradition with family, friends and coworkers!
Homemade Chex Mix
Every year, for as long as I can remember, my mom makes homemade chex mix during Thanksgiving. It is something I look forward to every year and my favorite holiday tradition.
Ingredients
- 11 cups corn chex cereal 1 box
- 11 cups rice chex cereal 1 box
- 11 cups wheat chex cereal 1 box
- 1 bag pretzel sticks
- 3 sticks butter
- 8 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 6 tsp seasoning salt Lawry's
- 3 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp onion powder
Instructions
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
In a large baking dish, combine all three flavors of Chex cereal.
Pour bag on pretzels into baking dish and try to break as many pretzels in half as you can. (This will allow the seasoning and butter cook into the pretzels.)
Mix all dry ingredients together in baking dish.
In a saucepan, melt the butter and stir in the Worcestershire sauce.
Once the butter and Worcestershire sauce are combined in a saucepan, add in the garlic powder, onion powder and seasoning salt.
Pour the liquid mixture over the pan of cereal and pretzels.
Mix everything together.
Bake at 250 degrees of 60 minutes, taking out and mixing every 15 minutes.
